COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Community Development

Communities are often pressed with the most challenging needs which foster collective efforts to address them for proper livelihood development. The poor communities are concerned about livelihood opportunities such as jobs, livelihood security, education, and access to basic services such as energy, water and sanitation, health and a decent place to live. Community development plays pivotal role in bringing community groups together in addressing some of these pressing needs. It seeks to empower people with skills to effect change within their communities through creating social community groups for a common agenda. In Uganda the main challenges that have affected the growth and development of communities is poverty. COVID-19 has worsened the effects and up to three million people could fall into poverty particularly in urban areas, above the estimated 8.7 million in FY17. Current social protection programs are inadequate, reaching just 3% of the population and increasing overall vulnerability to shocks. The inability of communities capacity to access stable incomes has influenced their access to better health care services, clean water and access to quality education and better infrastructure to foster growth and innovation.

Reason to participate in community development projects

Engaging in community development projects is an opportunity for you to work along with local Ugandan communities who are striving to adopt the initiative of starting small scale development projects in a bid to meet their livelihood needs. Working to improve the infrastructure and basic amenities could also go along the way towards this goal and also increasing overall community assets. Keeping the communities physically healthy, encouraging resource sharing, and building micro - economic opportunities is critical to this accomplishment and also removing community poverty traps.
