Business and Financial skills Development Training in Uganda

Project Summery:

In Uganda, many people do not have the knowledge necessary to start small businesses, yet with an entrepreneurial spirit.   They undertake entrepreneurial challenges and oftentimes fail as a result of their lack of entrepreneurial knowledge and skills. Nakanyonyi SACCO actively works against this trend and trains microloan recipients in business skills. It also helps create savings groups within the community where individuals can save small amounts of money each week and earn interest on their savings. 

Project Description: 

Nakanyonyi SACCO is in the process of equipping its clients with appropriate business and financial skills. This project is intended to develop basic business and financial training materials and use the materials to train SACCO members so as to gain a deeper understanding of a variety of business topics. These topics will include, basic strategies of developing a savings culture, membership mobilization, liquidity management, and the different loan products that exist at Nakanyonyi SACCO.  Additionally, the project will support entrepreneurial initiatives like vegetable high nutritional value addition in vegetables like mushrooms, and/or support the art and crafts making among the school dropout youths and teenage mothers. 

Intern Requirements: 

To be successful in this role, applicants should be studying or have a background in business, entrepreneurship, finance, accounting, or similar subject. Social workers, horticulture plus art and crafts specialists are encouraged to apply.  Applicants can concentrate on business and financial skills training OR support entrepreneurship skill OR both.  Applicants will be required to submit a CV as well as go through a phone interview for the vetting process before your placement is confirmed. A good level of spoken English is also essential for this placement.

Description of community partner: 

The Nakanyonyi Good Shepherd Cooperative Savings and Credit Society (SACCO) is a community micro finance organization.  The main program by the SACCO is Micro Credit and Savings. It mobilizes its community members  to develop a savings and credit culture,increase capital formation for investments, boost household income, promote networking for marketing, add value to SACCO and member activities, improve financial and business skills and knowledge,foster quality management, monitoring and evaluation of activities. The SACCO’s beneficiaries are mainly its clients and their families, the community at large, and the government. The first SACCO members were teachers from Nakanyonyi school in 2000 and currently, Nakanyonyi SACCO belongs to all members of the community.
